Your team will plan and carry out a research trail through the city. The Options Trail is an opportunity for you to investigate the research questions your team devised in the Mini Trail project. Each team will need to visit five sites. Sites are to be chosen for their relevance to your Options Trail questions.
Where do we go?
At least one of these sites should be a booked in and extended interview with an 'expert'.
Another one of the five sites should be chosen to complete a survey of a minimum of 15 people.
The remaining three sites should include two or more of the following types of evidence; extended interview, short interview, artefact + reflection or observational/data count. The evidence gathered on the Options Trail will be reflected on in the final presentation and will form the basis to you Focus Question for Options Week.
What do we do when we are at these sites?
Collect evidence and information to answer your questions. You will need to record the evidence via notes, sketches, photos, audio recording, video recording. In the past some groups have opted to make blogs or edit documentaries from their footage after Options Trail to collate their evidence. This evidence will be reflected on in your Final Presentations and also form the basis of your Options Week focus question.
What do we do before we go?
Each team will need to submit a trail plan, outlining their proposed research questions and trail.
This document will help you plan and keep track of your progress. Save a copy and upload it to you Team Project wikipage as you fill in the information. This will prevent you being in a situation where one group member holds all the info and you can make progress if someone is sick or absent.
This document will help you make sure you have done all the necessary tasks in relation to Options Trail planning. Check off the tasks and you can be sure you will submit all the necessary documentation to your homeroom teacher prior to Options Trail day.
By the time you go on Options Trail you will probably have developed some informed ideas about what you expect to find. This document will help you structure your hypotheses so you can compare your data to your initial ideas.
Each team will complete an Action Project that is linked to their research topic and is aimed at addressing a need within the community. An Action Project is a project that may help, inform or entertain others. Some examples of Action Projects that have been completed are listed below:
Presenting to a primary school class (e.g. film reviews, environment, law and order in Melbourne, origami)
Staff restaurant
Running an awareness campaign
Making a documentary
Creating an information brochure for future Year 9 students
Organising a class petition
Gathering information and forwarding this onto School leaders/ local Government
Tree Planting
The Galileo Loft mural (Street Art)
Year 9 writing competition
Volunteering at a homeless shelter
Below is the link to the 'Pitch' worksheet from the Activism Skills Workshop. This will be a handy planning resource for thinking about your Community Action Project.
If you plan on doing a school based action project, you must do the following before running it:
Get approval for your action project from Ms Porter [Assistant Principal] - you will need to submit a brief plan
Establish which day you are going to run the event - complete the daily bulletin form [at Main Office] - give to your homegroup teacher for approval, then return to Ms Lane in Sick Bay.
Create posters - make sure they are only hung on noticeboards[otherwise they will be removed]
If you are running a food stall - make sure that you bring a float [sufficient coins to be used as change]
The Final Exhibition will occur in the last week of term and is an opportunity for you to present and celebrate your Team's journey and achievements over the term.
Individual Planning - your personal journey:
Communicating your thoughts and ideas in visual form doesn't come naturally to many people. This document will help you structure and plan your personal journey section of the exhibition.
How can I choose an image (or images) to help me describe my Team Project journey?
1. Choose 3 adjectives, 3 verbs and 3 emotions that describe your experience of the team project at the beginning, middle and end of the term.
3. Remember to save the words and pictures you are interested in to a folder on your computer!
Presentation Options:
Your group can choose from a range of presentation styles and programs. What is essential is that you include all of the final exhibition criteria - along with multi-media representations of your evidence.
